Queen Rania presents Justin Trudeau with Global Citizen Award

Queen Rania presents Justin Trudeau with Global Citizen Award

On Tuesday evening in New York City, Her Majesty Queen Rania presented Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau with the Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award at the Intrepid Museum.

Her Majesty, who is on a working visit with His Majesty King Abdullah, took part in the ceremony that was attended by close to 450 global government, business, and civil society leaders.

Queen Rania spoke at the eighth annual awards before presenting the Prime Minister with his award explaining that she recalled co-chairing a session on refugees and migrants last year at the United Nations where he expressed his belief that all nations have a responsibility to do their part to solve the ongoing global refugee crisis. Her Majesty said, “For me, coming from Jordan, it was especially powerful to hear a Western leader speak this way.”

The Queen also commended Trudeau’s leadership as well as his “high regard for the values of openness, generosity, big-heartedness and broad-mindedness,” the Office of Her Majesty explained.

The Canadian Prime Minister received this award due to his “respect for universal freedom, diversity, and prosperity, and his promotion of open trade and open borders,” explained the Atlantic Council.

After receiving the award, Prime Minister Trudeau told the audience, in part, “This is not the time for retrenchment. It is the time for Atlantic democracies to renew our commitment to universal of rights and liberty enforced through a multilateral rules-based order that has promoted peace and withstood the test of time.”

President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae-in and pianist and philanthropist Lang Lang were also honoured.

Her Majesty also tweeted after the ceremony saying, “Congratulations @JustinTrudeau on winning the Global Citizens Award #ACAwards.”

The Queen won the award in 2013 and dedicated it to Jordan. She received the honour based on her support of humanitarian efforts and support of global education.

The Atlantic Council, a non-partisan international organisation, was founded in 1961 and “works to galvanise the transatlantic community to tackle a host of global challenges,” according to the Office of Her Majesty. Awardees are honoured annually for their leadership work in policy, business, military and the arts.
